Rachel Sennott on How Girls, Insecure, and Sex and the City Shaped Her

Dec 3, 2025 · 12:12

Actor, writer, and comedian Rachel Sennott (I Love LA, Bottoms) boards the New York City subway with Kareem Rahma for an unfiltered ride about making television, staying sane, and surviving your own brain. She talks about crying every day while making her new show “I Love LA,” the chaos of doing everything herself, and why no one warns you how emotional the process really is. She opens up about the shows that shaped her (Girls, Insecure, Sex and the City), why everyone needs one “cute little addiction,” and the spiral of phone addiction and screen time shame. Produced on the New York City subway. Summary

Rachel Sennott, the actor and comedian behind Bottoms and the new series I Love LA, tells Kareem she's been crying every day for a month after finishing her show. She's overwhelmed. She wrote it, starred in it, directed an episode, and now she's reading the reviews at "19 minutes" of screen time. They talk about her controversial take that everyone should get addicted to something once to prove they can quit (she picks nicotine and laxatives as examples, then immediately backtracks when Kareem says "opioids"). She describes I Love LA as "Entourage for Internet It Girls" with inspiration from Atlanta, Girls, Insecure, and Sex and the City. When asked which Entourage character she is, she claims Lloyd. She's a Marnie from Girls, a Miranda meets Charlotte from Sex and the City, and she used to have a crush on Turtle because "his pants are always too long." Kareem's a crammer who aimed for B minuses in college. Rachel carries a physical planner in her purse and makes to-do lists she can physically cross off.

No one sees anyone's hate comments on anyone except for themselves. You know what I mean? I've never seen anything negative about you. I've never seen anything negative about you. What are the positive things people say about you?

Oh my god, I bet you would give me a pill if I had a headache.

That was a good one. [music]

So, what's your take? Okay. My take is everyone needs to get addicted to one thing at least once in their life to prove to themselves that they can break an addiction.

100% disagree.

100% disagree.

Yes. You don't want to play with the fire.

Play with the fire.

No.

Yes. No.

I'm half Irish my entire life. My dad was like, "Watch out. Addiction will get you." And I was like, "No, it won't." And then it did a little. And then I bought the demons.

How much is a little?

Just like one year.

A little Rumspringa. A little spring of getting addicted to something.

What was it? Can we talk about what it was?

I don't know. I think it's, you know, I I dabbled in nicotine. I'm pulling away.

Nicotine? Yes.

I'm still addicted to nicotine.

Yeah. It's I just think I just

Wait, I just thought you smoking a cigarette.

Stop saying that. I [laughter] was

Wait. Stop. Stop. This is what happened. I broke it and I didn't smoke for a month and now there you can have a cigarette if you're in Europe and New York sort of counts as Europe at this point because I live in LA.

And if you're out with your friends

And if you're out with your friends

And if you're in a group of four or more people.

Yeah, sure.

And if you're doing seafood tower.

Okay, totally.

And if you've had a glass of wine

And if you're addicted to yes. But that other than that, addiction over. I'm going to go ahead and continue to push back on that

Because I've had my times where I say, "Look,

I'll just try these opioids."

No, no, no, no. I'm not saying just get addicted. You could get like addicted to like a weird workout routine. I was addicted to laxatives for one year. My take is ultimately wrong and dangerous and bad. And you said opioids and I went, "Fuck, I didn't mean it like that. [music]

What's your screen time?

My screen time? Yes. Do

You look like a seven hour girl?

No, it's five.

That's very hours. So reasonable.

And how do you keep it like that?

Um because I'm at my job and when and they're not allowed to let me look at my phone. They take it away from

Your job. What are you a nurse?

No.

So if if you didn't have the job telling you you can't look at your phone, what would you be at 8 10?

I would be at 8 or 10. Let me see.

Fine. Thanks, kid.

Mine's really unreasonably bad. Oh, actually, it's pretty good. 6:14.

Mine is probably worse this week cuz I've been like reading

Here we go again. Here we go again.

REVIEWS.

OH, [__] 19 minutes.

Pretty damn good.

Suck it.

You read the comments?

I was reading some stuff.

You know, I got a piece of advice that said, uh, you should do that. You shouldn't do [laughter] that.

Of course. Oh, you're the first person that to say that. Everyone said everyone says don't read it.

Well, you read it. No, sometimes

A little bit.

Just a little.

Just a little. Just

I just had to read it. I just had to read some stuff.

You wanted a little taste.

But I needed a little taste of how nasty it was to spit it out and go, I'm good.

Yeah.

Yeah.

And then it goes back to your original take.

Yeah. Exactly.

You want a little taste.

I want a little taste to go, whoa, this is bad. [music]

Do you cry a lot?

You know what's so crazy? I couldn't cry when we were making the show because I was so stressed and I was like, I just have to do this. And then in the last month, I've cried every day.

Are you crying tears of joy or tears of sadness?

Everything.

All the whole gamut.

Oh, a bunch. Just because there's so much going on.

You're just overwhelmed.

I'm just overwhelmed.

You wrote the show?

I wrote the show with a team of amazing writers.

You directed the show?

I directed one episode.

You star in the show.

I did.

You created the show.

Yes.

Okay. That's a lot.

That's a lot.

That's a lot.

That's a lot.

It's a little bit of this, a little bit of that.

A little bit of that, a little bit of this.

And it's called I Love Life.

I love LA.

It's not like a drama. It's a comedy, but I think there there are moments of emotion.

How do you feel about the comparison to the girls of our generation?

Honestly, I feel like that's so flattering. I love girls. I love like Insecure, Sex and the City, like all of those shows like inspired me and made me who I am. So, I feel like of course that inspiration is going to be there. Honestly, we talked about Entourage a lot as a reference to the show.

Great show.

Love that show. I was talking about the show as Entourage for Internet It Girls and so that was like a big reference for us. We also talked about Atlanta as a reference. And then hopefully what we ended up doing was like blending and taking inspiration and then making our own unique tone

In Entourage.

Yes.

Which character are you

In Entourage in real life?

I think you're a Lloyd.

I'm a Lloyd. I love Lloyd. I'm a Lloyd.

Which Girls character are you?

I would say I'm a Marnie.

Wow. I don't know anyone that would

Maybe acknow

That's good. And then Sex and the City. I'm a Miranda meets Charlotte.

Really?

Who are you?

I'm a Vinnie meets Turtle.

Okay.

Rising.

Oh my god. I used to have such a crush on Turtle.

That's the one you're attracted to?

He's just like a scoundrel.

He has great qualities

And he's his pants are always too long. And I love his big sneakers. I like to Turtle.

Okay. I want to finish answering the questions that you asked me.

Okay.

Sex and the City.

Yeah.

Carrie meets Big.

So, you're constantly fighting yourself?

Yeah.

You're at war with yourself.

And then Girls, I'm just that I'm just that girl.

You're Hannah.

Okay.

And what's the coffee shop guy's name?

Ray.

Yeah.

You're actually totally Ray. I love Ray. I love Ray.

I love Ray. I miss Ray. I'm a to-do listister. I like I like to make a list.

Physical or digital?

Physical.

Physical.

I need to be able to cross stuff off.

You're like a a girl with a notebook.

I'm a girl with a notebook. I'm a girl with a planner. I'm a girl with a massive planner.

And you're still doing that?

I'm carrying a planner around like in my purse kind of vibe.

That's nice.

Yeah.

When you were in college, did you cram or did you study?

Both.

You're not you're not a full crammer.

Not a full crammer.

I'm a crammer.

Did did you work for you? I got B minuses.

That's good.

But that's what I was aiming for.

That's good.

Cuz A's just

You were like, I don't need it. Who needs an A?

Who needs an A?

But in my work, I try to get an A.

Yeah, totally.

But it's really hard.

Did you cram for this or did you study?

No, I didn't.

You've been studying for years.

I've been studying you. I've been studying you for years.

Well, we've been following each other.

Yeah, we have.

We've been know we've been knowing each other.

We've been following for years.

So, you've been studying?

Yeah. Me, too. Me, too.

What are you listening to these days?

I've been listening to the new Addison album. I've been listening to I made a playlist of all the songs from the show and like I listen to it to get excited which is really fun. There's some like surprising stuff on there that I think people are going to like.

Did you listen to it on the way here?

No, I just I just didn't know music on the way here. If you need to listen to music every second of every day when you're like alone, you're going through something
