Big Brothers Big Sisters volunteer experienceBrooklynBrooklyn Mirage

Every transplant should have to volunteer somewhere

Aug 6, 2025 · 2:01

Summary

A transplant who volunteers for Big Brothers Big Sisters drops what Kareem calls "maybe the only good Subway take": every transplant should have to volunteer somewhere in New York. The rider argues that if the only thing you're contributing is taxes, you're a loser. Kareem agrees and proposes a tiered system. Been to the Brooklyn Mirage? That's three hours of service. Had an aperol spritz on St. Marks? Ten hours. Waited in line for a viral TikTok pastry? Twenty hours minimum. Made the TikTok that created the viral pastry? You might get kicked out entirely. Both agree transplants need to get out of their Williamsburg and East Village bubbles, find something they're passionate about, and give back to the city they claim to love. It's about cleaning up transplants' bad reputation and actually being part of the community.

So, what's your take? Every transplant should have to volunteer somewhere.

100% agree. I like that. Everyone should volunteer, but transplants need to put down roots. They need to get to know their community.

Are you a transplant? New York? Yes.

And you volunteer? Yes. I volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Me, too. I did it for for like the first 5 years I live. Isn't it so fun to be a big? Yes.

We actually need a lot of I think that this actually this is great because transplants have a bad reputation.

Right. We need to clean up our reputation. I feel like I'm taking so much. I'd like to give some back. That's what I'm saying is that it's like, okay, you moved to New York, you think New York is the best city in the world. Name one thing you've ever done to make it that way?

Except for pay taxes. Except for pay taxes. But if the only thing you're contributing is your taxes, you are ultimately a loser.

You are. I agree. Be part of your community.

That's very something. I think that the more transplant activities you participate in, the more you have to volunteer. So like for example, the Brooklyn Mirage, if you have ever gone there, that's 3 hours. If you have had an aperol spritz on St. Marks, that's that's 10 hours. That's more than 10 hours.

If you have ever waited in line for the latest viral TikTok pastry, that is 20 hours. If you have ever made the TikTok that made that the viral pastry, you might be kicked out of the city. Should be recoverable. It should be volunteer based. And if you don't do it within 3 years, you get conscripted.

Exactly. I think it's just good for our reputation and I think it's good to get involved with your city. It's good for the city. Get out of your bubble. Yeah. Get out of your little Williamsburg, East Village, Greenpoint uh vibe.

Do something. There's so many things to do too. Yeah. Find something that you feel passionate about. If you're a musician, teach kids music. If you're an actor, teach kids acting. It doesn't even have to be kids.

It could be dogs. It could be old people. This is a very good. This is maybe the the only good Subway take.

Holy, I did it. It might be the only Subway take that matters. Literally.

This is like It's a great idea.

This is incredible. I can't believe I won the game. You won the game.

No one knew that it was a competition. This is the last episode of the show.

What am I going to do now? Volunteers. And maybe I'll give my life to service like Gandhi.

I'm always thinking of you like Gandhi. Sick.
